Zayl was born from a personal experience during a study abroad semester at UTRGV, in Texas.

The community there was incredible. Welcoming, warm, the kind of place where people go out of their way to include you. But getting around was a different story.

My dorm was on campus, and like most students without a car, I depended entirely on friends to do anything off campus: groceries, errands, exploring the region on weekends. Without them, I simply couldn't have done it.

Moving between campuses was its own challenge. UTRGV runs across two campuses, Edinburg and Brownsville, connected by a shuttle that was slow and ran infrequently. If you missed it, or needed to move quickly between the two, your only real option was to find a friend with a car.

Meanwhile, the campus itself told a different story: huge parking lots, full of cars. Everyone who had one used it constantly, for everything, all the time. The mobility wasn't missing, it just wasn't shared.

That gap, between all those cars sitting on campus and students stuck without a way to move, is where the idea for Zayl came from.

US campuses are often small cities of their own: large, spread out, sometimes split across multiple sites miles apart. Public transit rarely covers them well, and where it does, frequency is low and schedules don't match student life.

Cars dominate. Most students who have one use it constantly. Most students who don't are stuck relying on friends, waiting on shuttles, or simply not going.

Zayl closes that gap by turning a campus's existing car traffic into a shared, instant mobility network, built around the one thing that already exists on every campus: community.

Our early focus is on university campuses facing exactly the challenge described above: large, dispersed, car-dependent, with real gaps in how students get around, especially between multiple sites.
